It is part of a nation-wide effort to eradicate poverty in America. Initiated by Move the Mountain, the Circles Campaign strives to transform communities by building relationships that inspire and equip people to end poverty.

About Us

Bonner County Circles: Sandpoint, Idaho, United States; Located in Northern Idaho, Bonner County Circles is one of three initiatives in Idaho. Operating in Sandpoint, Idaho our community-based Circle™ initiative consists of a families working to get out of poverty and several middle and upper income Allies who befriend them and lend support. The family is the Circle Leader, setting direction for activities. With the help and friendship of their allies, each family sets and achieves goals unique to their own needs.

Poverty in Our Area

In order to look at poverty in our area it is important to first know what Poverty really is.

Once upon a time, Poverty was the word used to describe a third-world country facing hardship. Today, poverty is on the rise and on the tip of every Americans tounge. Currently, according to the recent reports of the Cenus Bureau; 43.6 million or 14.3 percent of Americans live in poverty.

When you look at the demographics of Northern Idaho, many of those in poverty have either experienced generational poverty or situational poverty.

Generational poverty, is a learned helplessness passed on from parent to child and on down the line. This type of poverty teaches us how to become dependant on the system. As a child, you learn about foodstamps and why you have reduced lunches at your school.
Situational poverty, unlike its counterpart is caused by circumstances that takes a person or family to loose their current economic position in life. This type of poverty has increased over the past few years and as our economy declines, it is leaving many wondering how to access reasources they never had to use before. Many do not even know there is help.

Did you know?
1 in 8 Idaho children go to bed hungry. Idaho ranks first in the nation for young adults living in poverty (almost 3 out of 10). 1 out of 4 people in North and North Central Idaho are not meeting their basic needs. Bonner County ranks 28th among Idaho counties in median income, but it ranks 4th in the cost of housing.
